but the president has chosen chuck hagel or is, i guess, going to choose chuck hagel. and chuck hagel isn't going to be working for himself. he's not going to be freelancing as a senator as he was when he made these misstatements which i suspect have upset senator graham and other members of the senate who might be concerned about some of the things he said in the past. he'll be working for the president. when working for the president you follow the president's policies. i don't see this prior statement as being -- first off, they may -- they may have been wrong. he may have made some statements which were inappropriate, as he did. but everybody does, i guess. and now he's going to be working for the president. and carrying the president's policies forward. i think he'll probably carry them forward rather effectively. the thing i like about chuck, and i've known him for a long time. we had our differences when we were in the senate to say the least because he's a pretty strong personality. but i like the fact that he thinks outside the box. the defense department is g

so what do you think chuck hagel would bring? what will be president obama's argument to congress in terms of these hearings that chuck hagel uniquely can bring to that post? >> at one point it was thought that what president obama was seeking was a republican who could help sell difficult defense budget cuts to fellow republicans but that's gone by the boards. i don't see any visible evidence of republican support for their former colleague in the senate. and one of the things that's awkward about this is that we have secretary leon panetta, wht with no timetable. you have a lame duck secretary of defense, hard to make decisions, uncertainty about the future. if barney frank because the interim democratic senator from massachusetts when john kerry is confirmed as secretary of state, you've got somebody who is basically vowed to do whatever it takes to stop the hagel nomination as long as he's in the senate. the prospect is real confusion and uncertainty and the absence of effective active leadership has the department of defense

chuck hagel's was one of those votes. and when it came to the bigger issue of iran sanctions on the senate floor, chuck hagel, again, one of only two senators of the entire u.s. senate to vote against iran sanctions, with so many dictators-- >> i'm sorry, i didn't mean to interrupt you, but if i may, let's talk about the point of israel, what has been your concern with senator hagel on that issue. >> well, there was a letter circulated in the united states senate overwhelmingly, a high number of senators signed the letter, expressing something as simple as solidarity with the democratic jewish state of israel, our salad ally. chuck hagel refused to sign a letter expressing solidarity with israel and what we have seen is that he favors engagement with syria's al-assad, with il when he was alive and also, with all of the dictators who seek to harm u.s. interests and our allies. he wants further engagement with them. he doesn't think that we should penalize those dictators and that harms u.s. national security interests. >>

hagel backed both the afghan and iraq wars. hagel's also a vietnam war vet with two purple hearts and would be the nation's first pentagon chief to have seen combat as an enlisted soldier. he's come under fire for a gay slur of 15 years ago and he's apologized for. even though many may think those criticisms of iraq and afghanistan is invalid. john brennan earned the stripes at the cia and runs counterterror ops which basically means he's running the drone program and fighting al qaeda which is not necessarily the same thing. cia isn't a cabinet position. and brennan isn't up against many roadblocks there. nor any major controversy on senator john kerry's nomination for secretary of state. so, since we're a cable news show, we have to talk about the fight. the fight and for and against hagel at the pentagon. start with an afghan war veteran, anthony schafer, friend of the program. and now with the cent ef of advance defense studies and john saltz, chairman of votevets.org. tony, do you like the pick? is this good for america? >
